Peace Symbology

Presentation

The mission of Gernika Gogoratuz lies in enriching the symbol of Gernika within the framework of social action and reflection in favor of Peace, consolidating the Symbology of Peace which Gernika represents on a local and global level.

The historic, symbolic and cultural relevance of the City of Gernika, which was declared City of Peace by the UNESCO region of Europe (2002-2003) in 2004, makes it a preferred place for historical and social studies of culture through its symbolic representations and contributions to the Culture of Peace.

  • To improve the academic implementation of peace studies.
  • To participate in networks with other organizations.
  • To consolidate the financial resources and support of people, organizations and institutions in order to develop sustainable projects in the field of peace building and international cooperation.

Projects

  • Gernika’s annual International Convention on Culture and Peace, celebrated during the commemoration of the anniversary of the Bombing of Gernika, which has been celebrated in the city since 1991.
    • 2009 XIX. Gernika’s International Convention on Culture and Peace. Life stories, symbolic places and reconstruction of identities in the construction of Peace, form April 22th to 26th of 2009.
    • 2008 XVIII Gernika’s International Convention on Culture and Peace. Cosmopolitism and Local Peacebuilding, form April 24th to 27th of 2008.
    • 2007 XVII Gernika’s International Convention on Culture and Peace. Gernika, the Guernica y other Gernikas. Symbology of Peace, from April 23rd to 29th of 2007.


      • Financed by the Municipality of Gernika-Lumo, Provincial Councils of Bizkaia, Department of Human Rights of the Basque Government and Gernika Gogoratuz Foundation.

  • Summer Meeting of Gernika-Urdaibai.
    Financed by the University of de Basque Country (Universidad del País vasco- Euskal Herriko Unibertsitatea), the Municipality of Gernika-Lumo, Departament for Environmental and Territorial Issues of the Basque Government.

Activities

  • Organizes seminars with student groups and investigators of different universities on a national and international level.
  • Participates in conferences, round table discussions and workshops invited by other organizations and universities on a national and international level.
  • Collaborates on the module Introduction to Peace Investigation offered within the Master of Decentralized International Cooperation, Peace and Development by the University of the Basque Country.

Networks and conventions

 


Gernika Gogoratuz deems it important to strengthen networks with other organizations in order to promote grassroots participation within the development of Peace Building.

Participation in the following networks and forums since the creation of Gernika Gogoratuz:

  • Forum of Associations of Education on Human Rights and Peace - Giza Eskubide eta Bake Hezkuntzaren Elkarteen Foroa in 2007.
    Gernika Gogoratuz holds the presidency of the Forum since March, 2007.
  • BatzART Network. Work team to promote the Peace Process on the basis of democratic grassroots participation and creativity. Promoters are Artamugarriak, Bidea Helburu, Gernika Gogoratuz, Parte Hartuz, since 2006.
  • KM0 Astra de Gernika. Participatory Process since 2006.
  • Red BILGUNE. Work team of Associations of Gernika (Gernikatik Mundura, Ideasur, Gernika Gogoratuz) working in the field of peace building, interculturality and cooperation for development, since 2004.
  • Red Hazi. Work team on the transformation of conflict and Culture of Peace (Instituto de Mediación FOMED, GEUZ Centre of Transformation of conflict of the University of the Basque Country and Gernika Gogoratuz) since 2002.
  • Red Gernika. International network to support processes oriented towards reconciliation, coordinated by Gernika Gogoratuz since 1997.
  • AIPAZ (Spanish Association of Peace Investigation - Asociación Española de Investigación por la Paz) since 1996.
    Member of its board of directors since 2005.
  • Cooperative Board of the Reservation of the Biosphere of the patrons of Urdaibai, since 1996.
