The symbolism of making peace: a philosophical perspective. Vicent Martínez Guzmán. Doc 21

At the Gernika Gogoratuz Peace Research Centre, we have chosen to publish this text, The symbolism of making peace: A philosophical perspective, as a posthumous tribute and expression of gratitude to our much-admired friend, philosopher and peace researcher, Vicent Martínez Guzmán. The text was presented at the 17th Culture and Peace Conference — an international conference organised since 1991 in collaboration with Gernika-Lumo Town Council.

In 2007, the aforementioned edition was held as part of the commemorative events marking the 70th anniversary of the bombing of the town, under the title ‘Gernika, Guernica and the other “Gernikas”. Symbolism of Peace’. The decision to hold these conferences within this memorable context was based on two reasons highlighted by Vicent.

On the one hand, by remembering, to transcend the re-enactment of the immense harm that we humans can inflict upon one another and move beyond it. On the other hand, by remembering Gernika, to contribute significantly to coexistence through the recovery of its symbols of peace and reconciliation.
