Interdisciplinary perspectives for approaching the territory and its society

This publication is a significant contribution to the body of knowledge on Busturialdea-Urdaibai. It gathers the sharp and committed perspectives of experts familiar with the region, who present a clear-eyed view of the area from economic, social and environmental standpoints: the stabilisation of the agricultural, fishing and industrial sectors; the environmental threat posed by mass tourism, which will bring little benefit to the region; unemployment and precarious employment among young people and women; increasing difficulties in accessing land and housing; obstacles to the social inclusion of immigrant communities and the invisibility of pockets of poverty and social exclusion; the loss of identity and cultural heritage; water pollution, a water deficit and monoculture in forestry; flexible planning and a lack of a joint strategy for economic development; a lack of leadership, and a lack of communication between communities and institutions.

In the face of this portrait of the region, a firm commitment is made to strengthening the existing capacities in the territory and to articulating more socially inclusive spaces for deliberative dialogue, in order to envision shared and alternative strategic plans based on sustainability and social justice, to agree and launch them, whilst maintaining communication with the institutions.
