This publication forms part of the project marking the 82nd anniversary of the closure of the GERNIKA MILITARY HOSPITAL FOR PRISONERS OF WAR (1938–1940), a facility where 269 Republican prisoners died between 2 June 1938 and 3 June 1940, and were buried in the municipal cemetery of Zallo.

The publication includes the historical study originally carried out and published by JOSÉ ÁNGEL ETXANIZ ORTÚÑEZ and VICENTE DEL PALACIO SÁNCHEZ, ‘Morir en Gernika’ (Aldaba.122/ 2003): this work has been revised by the authors themselves to provide an updated version. In addition, members of the PIPERGORRI association, AMAGOIA LOPEZ DE LARRUZEA ZARATE and IÑAKI URIBARRENA IBARGUENGOITIA, have undertaken the task of documenting and cross-referencing the various lists of the deceased to publish a definitive register, alongside contributions of family testimonies and biographical details gathered during this research. The published list of the deceased aims to provide a correct identification of the names of these prisoners, as well as other details such as their gender and date of birth, all with a view to forming part of a census (currently being compiled) of victims of the Civil War and the Franco regime.

This historical-documentary project, the artistic installation created by José Ibarrola at the municipal cemetery in Zallo, and the tribute to the prisoners are aimed at the social rehabilitation of the 269 people who died there, raising awareness of the circumstances in which this occurred, disseminating knowledge about the Republican victims, and ultimately the moral rehabilitation of all of them. The ultimate aim is to contribute to putting an end to the unjust and self-serving oblivion that has persisted for so many years.

To the 269 deceased Republicans.
To their families.
