The rise of the far right in the 2019 European Parliament elections and its implications for migration policy. Jokin Alberdi Bidaguren. 2019

Following the strong electoral results achieved by far-right parties in various Member States, there are concerns regarding the elections and the composition of the next European Parliament. Whilst the securitisation and externalisation of common policies on border control, asylum and migration represent a curtailment of human rights, the rise of new right-wing populist, ultra-nationalist and fascist ideologies in the European Parliament portends a bleak outlook for migrants and European values. Only a strong citizens’ movement that asserts the right to life in the face of corporate neoliberalism, and that defends the values of solidarity and justice, will be able to confront this dangerous scenario towards which we are heading.
