Peacebuilders

Peacebuilders

María Oianguren, director of Gernika Gogoratuz, was selected in the ‘society’ category – which covers civil rights and structural peace – as one of the individuals who demonstrate that peace is an active, dynamic, participatory and creative process to which all of us who wish to build a fairer, more equal and more respectful world must commit ourselves.

If we were asked: ‘Could you name 10 people who have dedicated, or are currently dedicating, part of their lives to the culture of peace, respect for human rights, and the protection and care of our planet?’ What would our answer be? We would probably find it very difficult, and it would be much easier for us to name many more people associated with the culture of violence. Have you ever wondered why?

With the aim of alleviating, to some extent, this widespread lack of awareness regarding these issues and the scarcity of role models for peace in our society today, the Gernika Peace Museum has decided to create this exhibition, which is complemented by a catalogue, a board game and an educational workshop.

The 32 peace role models featured in this exhibition are just a small sample of the millions of peacebuilders across our planet who are making a vital commitment to building a peaceful world that is fairer and more respectful of human rights.
