Declaration of the urban area of Gernika-Lumo as a Place of Democratic Memory

Declaración Lugar de Memoria Democrática

Under the Resolution of 13 March 2024 of the State Secretariat for Democratic Memory, the urban area of Gernika-Lumo was declared a Place of Democratic Memory. The declaration encompasses the entire urban area of the town, extending the initial proposal to protect only a specific monument.

In this way, Gernika is recognised as a universal symbol of resistance, peace and the defence of civilians in the face of the horrors of war, while paying tribute to the victims of the bombing of 26 April 1937, carried out by the German Condor Legion and the Italian Aviazione Legionaria in support of the rebel forces during the Spanish Civil War.
