Declaration of the urban area of Gernika-Lumo as a Place of Democratic Memory

Gernika-lumo, lugar de memoria democrática

The urban area of Gernika-Lumo has been designated a ‘Place of Democratic Memory’ for embodying the values of the struggle to restore and strengthen democratic values.

The following sites form part of the ‘Gernika Bombing Route’ site of democratic memory as an urban space:
1. Gernika-Lumo Town Hall
2. Memorial stele in memory of those who died in the bombing (Jesús Aldama, 1987).
3. Air-raid shelters.
4. Park of the Peoples of Europe.
5. Urban sculptures in Gernika.
6. Peace Museum, Gernika 1937.
7. Gernika Gogoratuz Peace Research Centre.
8. Gernika Military Hospital for Prisoners of War.
9. Mausoleum for the victims of the bombing of Gernika.

In this way, Gernika is recognised as a universal symbol of resistance, peace and the defence of the civilian population against the horrors of war, and tribute is paid to the victims of the bombing of 26 April 1937, carried out by the German Condor Legion and the Italian Aviazione Legionaria in support of the rebels during the Spanish Civil War.
