THE MAYOR OF GERNIKA-LUMO RECEIVES THE PETE T. CENARRUSA PRIZE FOR HIS WORK IN FAVOUR OF HISTORICAL MEMORY

The Cenarrusa Foundation for Basque Culture in Idaho, USA, presented the award of the same name 2021 to the Mayor of Gernika, José Mari Gorroño “for his work in favour of historical memory, his commitment to good governance and dedication to the political, cultural and socio-economic growth” of the town. The ceremony was held on the 29th of November in the municipal plenary hall.

According to the jury, the mayor’s “emphasis” on “the protection and promotion of the Basque language, cultural expression and Basque identity and human rights” was valued. His work has always been aimed at making the town a friendlier and more modern place, but without losing its personality and without forgetting that its greatest heritage is its memory”.
