Memorialab: Dialogue, Memory and Social Healing in the Basque Country: A Methodological Note. Iñigo Retolaza. 2021

Memorialab: Dialogue, Memory and Social Healing in the Basque Country: A Methodological Note”  is part of the publication “The SAGE Handbook of Participatory Research and Inquiry”, the first handbook to offer the most comprehensive source of contemporary and cutting-edge approaches to the methods and design of participatory research, as well as the fundamentals of participatory research and critical issues in practice.

This article focuses on “Memorialab”, understood as an initiative for the social construction of memory through dialogue between people from different backgrounds and ideologies. Although in most cases they do not know one another, they all share the experience of having been affected in different ways by the political violence that has taken place over the last five decades in the Basque Country. Memorialab is based on the assumption that it is from a shared ethical and moral foundation of respect for life and human rights that a group of people opens up to share their experiences, their “autobiographical memory”.

Iñigo Retolaza Eguren is a contributor to Gernika Gogoratuz and a facilitator on the Memorialab programme.
