GERNIKA GOGORATUZ PARTICIPATES IN THE PUBLICATION “DISCOVERING THE SILENCED”

Discovering the silenced: the Italian participation in the Spanish civil war.
Scoprire i silenziati: la partecipazione italiana alla guerra civile spagnola.

María Oianguren, director of Gernika Gogoratuz, has participated on the publication “Discovering the silenced: the Italian participation in the Spanish civil war” on the topic “Citizen diplomacy and practices for a memory pedagogy”.

The chapter presents the labor the Peace Centre Investigation of Gernika Gogoratuz has carried out on citizen diplomacy as a memory pedagogy and in the peace culture area. Moreover, it addresses the symbolic gestures that facilitated the reconciliation process among Gernika and Germany that, together with the Centre creation in 1987 and of the Gernika Peace Museum in 1988, supported the “City of Peace” Prize awarded by UNESCO to the town for the European region in 2002-2003. Finally and in order to sum up, it highlights some of the lessons obtained in the peace construction all over the 35 years trajectory.

Discovering the silenced: the Italian participation in the Spanish civil war – Scoprire i silenziati: la partecipazione italiana alla guerra civile spagnola, aims to give an account of all the work carried out and to show that we are at the beginning of a long road of collaboration between organizations in the Basque Country, Catalonia and Italy to visualized how much it still needs to be done and to address the issue from various perspectives (historical, diplomatic, research, archival, legal, educational, social…) in both countries.
