THE INTERNATIONAL COMMISSION AGAINST THE DEATH PENALTY RECOGNISED WITH THE RENÉ CASSIN PRIZE 2023

The International Commission against the Death Penalty -ICDP- has been recognised with the René Cassin 2023 prize on December 11th by the Basque Government, in the 75th anniversary commemoration of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Marta Santos Pais, the former Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General on Violence against Children was the one in charge to receive it.

In this edition the Basque Government has granted the René Cassin to the International Commission against the Death Penalty, “for its tireless struggle in favor of the abolition of death penalty in all countries and regions of the world”.

According to the jury’s verdict “throughout the awareness-raising, research, policy advocacy, technical assistance to states and collaboration with the United Nations, ICDP works tenaciously to prevent executions, eliminate unfair and arbitrary practices, develop alternatives to the death penalty and promote fairer and more humanitarian penal systems”.

The event took place in the Sudo Villa Palace in Vitoria-Gasteiz within an act chaired by the Lehendakari Iñigo Urkullu.
