This publication makes a significant contribution to our understanding of Busturialdea-Urdaibai. It brings together the rigorous and committed perspectives of experts and those with in-depth knowledge of the region, who paint a rather bleak economic, social and environmental picture: stagnation in the agricultural, fishing and industrial sectors; the environmental threat posed by mass tourism, which brings little benefit to the region; unemployment and job insecurity amongst young people and women; growing difficulties in accessing land and housing; obstacles to the inclusion of immigrant communities and the invisibility of pockets of poverty and social exclusion; loss of identity and cultural heritage; water pollution, water scarcity and monoculture forestry; volatile planning and a lack of a shared economic development strategy; absence of leadership and a lack of communication between the community and institutions…
In light of this regional picture, there is a firm commitment to strengthening the capacities already present in the territory and to creating more socially inclusive spaces for deliberative dialogue that contribute to imagining, agreeing upon and implementing, in consultation with the institutions, shared strategic plans and alternatives based on sustainability and social justice.
