The central theme of this book is the interdisciplinary exchange and the way in which its philosophy and methodology engage with other efforts to generate knowledge through participatory processes. The book, conceived as a tool for the practice of a sociology of engagement, reflects on the ethical dimension of participatory processes and highlights their political dimension—that ambition for empowerment and urgency for change which, in terms of the Cruce de Saberes, is presented as the result of the co-production of new knowledge.

Who does knowledge belong to? Emancipation, interdisciplinary exchangeand the fight against poverty draws on workshops, colloquia, projects, research and training processes that have helped to transform unjust and oppressive realities, and brings together articles by 34 authors who, drawing on diverse realities across the Americas and Europe, invite us to continue the reflection and to foster conversations and practices that help to develop the knowledge we need to advance the eradication of poverty.

Iñigo Retolaza, a collaborator of Gernika Gogoratuz, contributes to this publication with the chapter “¿De quién es este conocimiento? Cuatro cartas reflexivas hacia la democratización del conocimiento en procesos participativos” in which he shares his action-research experience on the social construction of memory (Afaloste, Memorialab).
