Since early October 2017, an armed conflict has cast a shadow over the lives of the inhabitants of Cabo Delgado province. Over the past five years, and according to figures published on 12 October 2022 by the “Cabo Ligado” newsletter, 4,322 people have died as a result of organised violence. To date, it has been impossible to quantify how many people have died from indirect causes resulting from forced displacement, trauma, the lack of healthcare services or the inability to produce food.

According to the International Organisation for Migration, by the end of September 2022 there were 946,508 internally displaced persons, representing 40.79% of the province’s population. Of these, 55% are children, 24% are women and 21% are men. Of the total number of displaced people, only 30% (287,664) are in reception or resettlement camps. The remaining 70% (658,844 people) are living in family homes, rented accommodation or homes lent to them by relatives and others.

One of the most dramatic consequences of this situation is the worst humanitarian crisis Mozambique has faced since the end of the 16-year war, with nearly one and a half million people in need of urgent food aid for their immediate survival. Not only the population that has fled their places of origin, but also those hosting them, have been living in a situation of extraordinary vulnerability over the last five years.

The publication is available in the Mozambican languages: Portuguese and Makhuwa.
